Makaton

A communication system that uses signs, symbols, and speech to help people with learning disabilities or communication difficulties. It combines simple hand gestures (signs), visual symbols, and spoken words to support understanding and expression. Makaton is often used by children and adults with conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, and other communication-related challenges, helping them to develop language skills and express their needs effectively.

Deaf Relay Interpreters

A Deaf Relay Interpreter is a specialist deaf professional who supports deaf people who may not use standard British Sign Language (BSL), including those with learning disabilities or additional communication needs. They work alongside a hearing BSL interpreter, communicating directly with the deaf person in a way that suits them, then relaying the message so it can be spoken to the professional. This helps ensure clear understanding in complex or sensitive situations such as healthcare, legal, and social care settings.

Sign Supported English (SSE)

Combines sign language with spoken English. It uses signs from American Sign Language (ASL) or other sign languages but follows the structure and grammar of spoken English. SSE is often used in educational settings or in situations where both hearing and deaf individuals need to communicate, allowing those who are familiar with English grammar to understand the signs while still using a sign language-based approach.
