Daksha helps provide free meals for over 450,000 people

Daksha Varsani’s tireless work to help the most vulnerable in her community has been honoured by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Daksha, one of Language is Everything’s linguists, created a volunteering program with her husband Paresh Jethwa called the Community Response Kitchen in 2020 to help anyone in need of support - from the elderly to the socially isolated and the homeless.

Originally, the organisation was set up to support NHS doctors and nurses who were on the front line against coronavirus, with Daksha’s team providing them with hot, cooked meals.

However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the focus of the not-for-profit organisation has evolved to ensure the disadvantaged communities across London receive fresh, hot, meals seven days a week.

The programme has now grown from providing 50 hot meals a day to 250,000 - all within the space of 100 days.

Daksha and Paresh’s remarkable achievement has been honoured by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The Prime Minister said: “Your endeavours are a fantastic example of the community spirit which has united and uplifted our nation throughout this battle with Coronavirus.”

With more people losing their jobs throughout these uncertain times the risk of poverty, unemployment and homelessness are increasing.

In future, the Community Response Kitchen will continue to support others by cooking hot vegetarian meals for the elderly, homeless, schools and supporting food banks across London.
