Speak Out Conference in Scarborough: A Call for Change
Posted on 28th October 2024 at 14:53
We recently had the opportunity to attend the Speak Out conference in Scarborough, an event aimed at connecting survivors of domestic abuse, charities, businesses, and professionals. The primary purpose was to highlight the importance of why organisations should support the Domestic Abuse Charter and encourage the implementation of domestic abuse policies.
From the outset, it was clear that this would be a day full of knowledge and emotion. The stories shared by survivors were deeply moving, reminding us of their resilience but also the profound challenges many face. These stories highlighted the need for change and better awareness from employers.
One of the highlights of the conference was a speech delivered by our colleague, Rebecca Hamilton. She addressed the concept of cultural humility, emphasising the need to understand and respect the diverse backgrounds of those affected by domestic abuse. Rebecca also explained how Language is Everything has integrated a domestic abuse policy into it’s organisation. This policy is not just a formality; it represents our commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
As the day unfolded, it became evident that while the stories shared were heartbreaking, they also served as catalysts for change. We were reminded that everyone has a role to play in this important work—whether through advocacy, policy development, or simply having access to information to ‘signpost’ those in need.
The Speak Out conference was not just a gathering; it was a call to action. It reinforced Language is Everything’s commitment to highlighting domestic abuse awareness and prevention. The company is dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone feels safe and supported, and where our policies reflect our commitment to cultural humility and inclusivity.
Together, we can work toward a world where domestic abuse is no longer tolerated and where every individual can thrive in a safe and nurturing environment. Thank you to all who participated and contributed to this vital conversation. Together, we can make a difference.
