Polish up to second place in EITI’s top languages

In the 29 months since Poland joined the European Union, Polish has risen from 15th to 2nd place in EITI’s top 20 languages.

EITI’s rankings are based on the number of requests from UK public authorities for telephone and face to face interpreters.

Poland joined the EU on 1st May 2004. From a ranking of 16th in June 2004, Polish entered EITI’s top 10 languages in January 2005. In November 2005 it reached 4th place, and in September 2006 moved up to 2nd - its highest-ever position on EITI’s list.

“We should, of course, be careful about drawing too many conclusions from our data,” said Carolyn Burgess, EITI’s Chief Executive. “Our figures only relate to our customers, not the UK public sector as a whole. Having said that, we supply services to a wide range of public authorities throughout the country, so it is a national picture of sorts.”
