Audra Verpetinskate

When Audra Verpetinskaite walked into the EITI offices in Howden – she thought she must have died and gone to heaven.

The Lithuanian accountant had struggled hard to find short-term work since coming to England in 2004 when Lithuania joined the EU.

“I had always kept busy with jobs like waitressing and packing,” she said. “But when I walked into EITI, it was like a New World. I could hear so many different languages, including Lithuanian being spoken. I was so surprised to find that I was in such an international place.” EITI is the third largest interpreting and translation agency in the world.

“I could hear people talking Lithuanian,” Audra said. “I realised this was an international office and I only discovered it because I came to do a bit of cleaning for an agency.”

EITI Chief Executive Carolyn Burgess soon recognised how capable Audra was. “She is so hard working, helpful and nothing is too much trouble,” she said. “My office manager discovered in conversation that Audra had accountancy qualifications and had been an accounts manager for two years in Lithuania. Audra said she was willing to study at home to gain the equivalent qualification here and she was invited to join our accountancy department where she is already proving extremely capable. It is great for us to be able to help someone who has had such a struggle and is so determined to succeed.”

As for Audra? “I have my first permanent job now,” she said.

“Sometimes I can not believe it yet. It is so exciting to be working in Howden ” she said. “I am so proud to be here and part of this firm.”
