Yorkshire gears up for ‘Christmas around the world’
Yorkshire schoolchildren are being challenged to design a Christmas card based on the theme of ‘Christmas around the world’.
It’s all part of this year’s schools’ competition from EITI, the interpreting and translation company based in Howden.
Last year, EITI set local children the task of designing a poster based on the theme of ‘language and communication’ - the winners on that occasion came from Carlton-in-Snaith Community Primary School and Hemingbrough Community Primary School.
Although this year’s competition has a festive theme, the principle behind the challenge remains unchanged.
“We’re trying to help and encourage children to think about the big wide world,” says Carolyn Burgess, EITI’s Chief Executive.
“As before, we’re not going to be judging entries primarily on technical merit. Instead, we’re looking for designs that best capture the spirit of the theme.”
Winning pupils from three age groups (5-9, 10-13 and 14 plus) will each receive book vouchers worth £50, and the overall winner will be able to see their design turned into a professionally-produced Christmas card.
To help get imaginations fired up, EITI has produced some helpful handouts that teachers are welcome to use in the classroom: ‘Ten Christmas facts from around the world’ and ‘How to say “Merry Christmas” or “Season’s Greetings” in other languages’.
The closing date for entries to the Christmas card competition is Friday 18th November 2005. Full details of the competition can be obtained from EITI on freephone 0800 731 7878.
