EITI helps schoolchildren celebrate World Book Day 2005

The Howden-based interpreting and translation company EITI is marking World Book Day - Thursday 3 March - by giving away thousands of bookmarks to schoolchildren in Yorkshire and the Humber.

World Book Day was devised by UNESCO as a way to encourage people, particularly children, to discover the joy of reading. The festival, which is based on an old Catalan tradition, was celebrated in 30 countries last year.

EITI's bookmarks feature inspiring quotations about language, such as the late Italian film director Federico Fellini's "A different language is a different vision of life". The bookmarks, which are also notable for their colourful foam characters, have proved to be incredibly popular with children (and adults) of all ages.

"We wrote to schools in the region to see if they might be interested in this, and we were overwhelmed by the response," says EITI's Operations Manager Dawn Bowes. "Children are absolutely fascinated by languages, and it's great to be able to celebrate World Book Day in this way."

The bookmark campaign is the latest schools-based community project to be undertaken by EITI. In January, the company launched a series of educational workshops for schools in partnership with the local football team Goole AFC. Last year, meanwhile, EITI ran a successful poster competition that challenged Yorkshire pupils to come up with a design based on the theme of language and communication.
