Schoolchildren rise to the challenge of language and communication

A policeman finds a lonely and confused child who cannot speak any English. Unable to communicate with the frightened boy, the policeman calls the interpreting and translation company EITI. An interpreter swiftly arrives - complete with a Superman-style cape - and speaks to the child in his own language. “EITI solved the mystery. The boy is happy!”

A typical day’s work for the Howden-based language company EITI - according to 10 year-old Becky White from Carlton in Snaith Primary School. Becky was the winner in the 9-13 age group of EITI’s poster competition 2004, which challenged schoolchildren in East Yorkshire to come up with a design based on the theme of language and communication.

The pupils were helped by a set of classroom handouts produced by EITI that answered questions ranging from ‘How many languages are there in the world?’ to ‘How do you say “Hello” in different languages?’

The winners in the under-9 category were Helena Gelder and Lewis Smith-White, from Hemingbrough Community Primary School, for a poster featuring bright sunshine, blue skies and the word "Hello" in five different languages.

Becky and Helen each win book vouchers worth £50 for their work, while Carlton in Snaith Primary School receives a brand new computer worth £500.

The judging panel included Mike Stannard, the manager of Goole AFC’s under-19 academy team and a coach with the junior football club Parkside Raiders. The other members of the panel were EITI’s Chief Executive Carolyn Burgess, Managing Director Carol Curtis and Accounts Manager Bev Williams.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the pupils and teachers who took part in this,” said Carolyn Burgess. “The children have responded to our challenge with incredible imagination and a lot of careful thought. We’re delighted to have received letters from teachers saying that the whole exercise was both fun and educational.”
